Expert Review Summary
Our clinical assessment and verdict for each device
Garmin Index S2
"Great for weight-focused users in the Garmin ecosystem, less so for precise body-composition tracking."
We evaluated the Garmin Index S2 over eight weeks with 42 participants (22 female, 20 male). Weight readings were benchmarked against a calibrated Class III medical scale; body-composition outputs were compared with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). The S2 showed excellent weight precision (±0.2 kg) but an 8.2 % average deviation for total body-fat percentage, increasing to 11.5 % in women. Muscle-mass estimates were the least accurate, averaging a 13 % deviation. Hardware build quality, OLED display legibility, and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth connectivity all ranked highly. However, the device lacks segmental analysis and offers minimal correction algorithms for sex-specific impedance differences. At $150, its value is good for Garmin Connect users but may disappoint athletes needing lab-grade body-composition metrics.
Oxiline Scale MD Pro (Gen 2)
"An excellent eight-electrode scale combining strong DXA agreement, precise contact design, intuitive controls and comprehensive app insights."
Across 10 weeks of testing with 10 individuals, Oxiline Scale MD Pro Gen 2 earned 95/100 overall: accuracy 96, hardware 95, display 93 and app 94. DXA comparisons found 2-4% deviations in body fat and 1-3% in muscle-related values. Water estimates varied 2-4%; their reference method was not specified. These results support strong performance within the tested group. Its eight-electrode ECHO system uses broad handheld contacts and ITO electrodes integrated into the glass platform. This allows more flexible foot placement and helped deliver repeatable readings. The sturdy build feels premium. A bright color OLED display guides setup, selects profiles and lets users browse eight metrics plus segmental fat or muscle at their own pace. The Oxiline app pairs clean daily summaries with detailed composition views, historical trends, polished PDF reports and useful AI explanations. Apple Health and Health Connect integrations and automatic Wi-Fi uploads make tracking convenient without a phone at weigh-in. At $199 with no required app subscription, the package offers excellent value. The 10-person test is encouraging but not a substitute for larger independent validation.
