The Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 and Galaxy Watch 8 Classic represent a significant advancement in wearable medical technology for home use. The device is centered around the Samsung Health Monitor app, which provides FDA-cleared electrocardiograph (ECG) and sleep apnea pre-screening features. For respiratory health, the watch identifies signs of moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) by monitoring relative decreases in blood oxygen levels during sleep. This feature requires at least two nights of successful measurements with a minimum of four hours of sleep each night to provide notification. The ECG function is capable of recording single-channel Lead I rhythms to identify episodes suggestive of Atrial Fibrillation (AFib). Clinical validation of the ECG algorithm demonstrated a sensitivity of 96.0% for AFib and 98.7% specificity for sinus rhythm. Beyond these core clinical functions, the Watch 8 introduces innovative metabolic and vascular load tracking, as well as an advanced glycation end products (AGEs) index to monitor long-term lifestyle impact. While highly accurate as a screening tool, it is not intended to replace traditional hospital-grade diagnostic methods.
